Roof system
Asphalt Shingle Roofing explained
An asphalt shingle starts as a fiberglass mat. Hot asphalt is bonded to both sides to form a waterproof core, and ceramic-coated stone granules are pressed into the top to block UV and give the roof its color.
Architectural (dimensional) shingles are thicker than older 3-tab shingles, hold up better in wind and give a roof more depth. Impact-resistant shingles are available for hail-prone regions, and some insurers discount premiums for them.

Questions
Asphalt Shingle FAQ
Can you match my existing shingles?
In most cases we can find a close match. If a style has been discontinued, insurance policies often cover replacing the full slope so the roof stays uniform.
How long does a shingle replacement take?
Most homes are completed in one to three days, depending on size, pitch and weather.
Are impact-resistant shingles worth it?
In hail country they often are. They resist cracking better, and many insurers offer a premium discount for them.
